Reading at the Beach

A row of readers.
Still life,
Amidst the effervescent beach,
Backs lounging against a log.

Facing out to sea
Toes sinking in the sand
Soaking up the sun
Slowly turning pages

Coconut lotion scents the salty breeze
Cocks crowing
Following mama hen with her chicks
Waves breaking on the jetty protecting the small pools
Where hopeful snorkelers adjust their masks and sink below the surface

"Look there", shouting and pointing
Swimmers converge
Squeals fill the air
A toddler racing to see, cries “Me too, me too”
Tumbling near the edge of the water

Another wave rolls in
Splashing exuberantly up into the sky
Another page turns
Swishing softly

A brush of sand,
A sip of water
Eyes raise briefly to the sea
And rest back upon the page.
